Garden Club celebration “50 years and still growing”

The first meeting for the Sooke Garden Club was held on September 20, 1971 and this September marks the 50th anniversary for the Club. With over 100 members it has brought many opportunities for gardeners to gather, share their passion and knowledge, trials, triumphs and errors all for the sake of the love for gardening.

So with any milestone, this brings a chance to gather and celebrate, meet up with friends, and make new ones. The club has been busy planning some special events to mark and reflect turning 50. The Museum will be our host from August 14th -September 30th with many displays including trophies, pictures and fun facts about the club over the last 50 years. If you like contests, there will be a colouring contest for kids, a floral/veggie arrangement contest, and a guest book to sign with your name entered into a draw at the end of September for a prize.

This year marks the 50th anniversary for the Sooke Garden Club and to honour the club and its members a commemorative garden has been planted. A committee was formed to plan and initiate the planting and Ayre Manor was chosen for the site. The club has a long history with Ayre Manor as members have helped put in a garden area in the past.

With the help of volunteer members, and generous donations throughout the community and beyond the garden was updated with new soil, deer resistant plantings and finished with a layer of mulch. A marble plaque is in the making and will be positioned in the garden. The garden will be maintained by Ayre Manor Garden volunteers, as well as Garden Club members. Both sides of the entrance have a path to the courtyard gardens, and it will be enjoyed by residents and visitors to Ayre Manor.
