Everything Dahlias

In midsummer they start to show their beauty, sprouting up from tubers creating big, full flower heads some the size of dinner plates. In a rainbow of colors, from deep magenta to bunny tail pink, butter yellow, and anywhere in between. Dahlias are becoming more and more sought after, in some cases making it hard to find at your local garden shop.

Like many flowers the dahlia symbolizes a variety of things:

  • Staying graceful under pressure

  • Drawing upon inner strength to succeed

  • Traveling and making a major life change in a positive way

  • Staying kind despite being tested by certain life events

And each color carries its own meaning. A few references to color are Red, conveys power and strength, White, a symbol of staying focused, Pink and Purple are associated with kindness and grace.

Three guest speakers from the Victoria Dahlia Society, Marguerite Casey-Wolnicki, President, Emily Erickson, Vice President, and Thomas Wolnicki, Membership, Director are joining for the February meeting.

Emily is the Victoria Dahlia Society’s Learning Garden Coordinator and certified Dahlia judge. She was introduced to dahlias ten years ago and is passionate about continuing to grow her knowledge and share with others, both her husband’s late uncle and grandfather were prize winning dahlia growers in England and loves to be able to carry on this hobby in her own family.

Having grown up and now raising her family on the island Marguerite has been gardening for 30 years and developed a passion for all things Dahlia. Experimenting with different growing technics and passing on her knowledge through the Victoria Dahlia Society.
