The Importance of Native Plants

February speaker, Abbey Hyde

With the climate shifting to warmer summers, colder spring and winters gardeners are looking for hardy plants that can withstand the continuing change in temperatures. Providing the best environment for any plant will result in many years of enjoyment for the birds, insects and ourselves. Particularly if you are planning a new landscape design, looking into native plants can help establish a background for strong, diverse habitats. Over the long term also decreasing the need for watering as they will adapt to the conditions.

Abby Hyde first discovered her passion for native species and restoring compromised ecosystems while growing up in Bali, Indonesia. After moving to Victoria in 2016 to pursue a BSc in Geography and Environmental Studies at UVIC it instilled a love of native plants of British Columbia. In 2021 Abby started with Satinflower Nurseries and heads orders and consults for meadow scaping projects.

As Abby has shared, she will speak on the importance of native plants, and their ability to restore and enhance habitat within the urban context. Her presentation will highlight ways in which individuals can convert their properties into pollinator friendly landscapes. At the end of her speech there will be an opportunity to purchase some of the plants outlined in her presentation.

Sooke Garden Club members are welcome to join the meeting on Wednesday, February 28 th at 7:00pm at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. If you would like to become a member, check our Facebook page or email us at sookegc@gmail.com.
