What Makes Up A Good Quality Soil?

Most gardeners know the golden rule, “have a good soil base to start”. With a rich, nutrient filled mixed soil, it’s like a smoothie for the trees, perennials, shrubs, flowers we intend to grow and enjoy. Without that base, some may struggle to build strong root systems, and longevity.

Michaila who works alongside her father and brother at Sooke Soil & Landscape Ltd., a local family-owned business will walk us through what makes up a good quality soil. Sooke Soil provides all your gardening needs, with many varieties of soil, compost, bark, gravel, paving stones etc. Michaila has an undergraduate degree in Biology from Queen’s University and shares her knowledge and time helping gardeners and landscapers. She also is developing and testing soil blends and managing the new vermicomposting units.

Michaila will share pointers on the benefits and drawbacks of using Native Soil, best soil for greenhouses, raised beds, in ground beds and lawns, soil testing, using fertilizers and amendments as well as how to bring back ‘dead’ soil. She will also talk about compost and mulching techniques and benefits.

If you are a SGC member or new to Sooke, or gardening, join the Sooke Garden Club on Wednesday, February 26th at 7:00 pm at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. If you would like to become a member, join here.
