Stick To Your Roots
As the summer packs up its early morning sunrises, long days, and warm nights, it is a time to reflect on the gardens that provided a bounty of veggies, herbs and fruit. If there was no room or opportunity to grow your own veggies, the markets in Sooke, Shirley, and Sydney as well as all through out Victoria were bursting with beautiful produce. I saw tomatoes that looked so perfect, it was a crime to cut into them.
Root vegetables are a staple for the fall and winter months approaching. Brewing up stews, soups, chillis, pot pies, letting the veggies simmer engulphed in spices and sauces. Mary-Alice Johnson from ALM Organic Farm will take us through how she grows good carrots, beets, turnips, potatoes, radishes, celeriac and many other root veggies. She will also discuss the diseases that plague these crops, as well as proper soil preparation, rotation of crops, and seeding or propagation issues that may arise.
