February To-Do List

  • Weed! Weed! Weed!

  • Buy/organize seeds, pots, potting mixes, grow lights, etc.

  • Prepare beds for spring planting – add compost and dust with lime (skip the lime where potatoes will be growing)

  • Prune late-flowering trees and shrubs – wait until after flowering to prune early bloomers

  • Prune fruit trees/bushes/vines before the buds swell

  • Plant bare-root trees and shrubs

  • Fertilize garlic by top dressing with compost

  • Finish dividing/moving perennials

  • Cut back and fertilize perennials, and apply mulch

  • Lift and divide bulbs after the flowers fade but before the foliage dies

  • Plant vegetable/flower seeds and seedlings in accordance with local planting guides

  • Harvest overwintered root vegetables before they go to seed

  • Continue enjoying brassicas and greens that survived the winter cold

  • Take pleasure in the all the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes that herald the end of winter and the start of another growing season!
