Winter To-Do List
Prepare beds and containers for spring planting by adding compost and dusting with lime (skip the lime in potato beds).
Assess cold-damaged plants (including veggies) for regrowth potential and remove any dead parts.
Hard prune roses.
Prune early-blooming trees and shrubs after they finish flowering.
Plant bare-root trees and shrubs as soon as possible.
Fertilize garlic by top dressing with compost.
Divide/move perennials while the ground is still cool and moist.
Finish cutting back and fertilizing perennials and apply mulch.
Lift and divide bulbs after the flowers fade but before the foliage completely dies.
Start seeds indoors for brassicas, warm-weather veggies, herbs and flowers that will be transplanted later in the garden.
Plant seeds/seedlings outdoors in accordance with local planting guides.
Continue enjoying winter veggies and hardy greens from the garden until they go to seed.
